Joanne

Joanne has deep experience handling a broad range of complex commercial litigation for clients in several industry sectors. She has successfully defended clients in disputes in federal courts in California, New York, and Illinois, as well as many state courts. Joanne's work spans cases involving employment, construction, insurance and consumer litigation, commercial torts, class actions, and statutory actions such as the Telephone Consumer Privacy Act and the Biometric Information Privacy Act.

Joanne's practice centers on resolving cases at the motion stage through effective legal writing and a focus on the pure legal basis of each claim. She approaches each case by carefully analyzing the elements of the claims to craft arguments outside of the factual circumstances. With a goal-oriented approach to settle disputes in early stages, Joanne brings a fee-sensitive outlook on behalf of her clients to determine the best outcome. While focused on pre-trial resolution, Joanne has deep knowledge of court rules and procedures and often supports trial counsel by crafting jury instructions and trial motions to enhance the odds for victory when a trial is necessary.

Joanne often defends policyholders in insurance coverage class actions, especially those with underlying issues involving claims under TCPA and BIPA. Her successful representations include securing dismissals of consumer class action complaints and obtaining insurance coverage for policyholders sued for violations of federal statutes. A particular highlight is Joanne's work on "blast fax" cases, which resulted in a victory for policyholders in the Illinois Supreme Court, overturning a decision by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals denying coverage based on issues concerning the definition of privacy.

With her focus on appellate advocacy, Joanne created a seminar on effective appellate writing and argument, which she presented with the Honorable Dianne Wood of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and other counsel at an American Bar Association conference. She also acts as an advisor to attorneys at other law firms seeking to obtain appeals before the Illinois Supreme Court. As a strong proponent for ongoing legal reform, Joanne recently drafted and filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court of Ohio on behalf of national pharmacy associations.
